Finn Riggins returns to Bend’s Silver Moon

Published: September 18. 2009 4:00AM PST

I’ve written quite a bit about the Idaho-based experimental pop band Finn Riggins over the past couple months. Search their name at my Frequency blog (www.bendbulletin.com/frequency) and you’ll find a link to a feature story, a review of their show in June, and a downloadable MP3 from their brand new album “Vs Wilderness.”

So let’s talk instead about Church, the Portland band that’s coming over the mountains to open for the Idahoans in Bend on Thursday.

Whereas Finn Riggins takes Talking Heads-ish pop music and injects it with stadium choruses and a shot of caffeine, Church works more subtly, constructing warm, skewed pop tunes that unfold at a snail’s pace and incorporate little blasts of noisy weirdness along the way. Imagine The Beach Boys with a more warped world view and a belly full of cough syrup, and you’ve got it.

You can find Finn Riggins by Googling, but Church is a little more challenging. Hear them at www.myspace .com/songforcecrystal.

Finn Riggins, with Church ; 8 p.m. Thursday; $5; Silver Moon Brewing & Taproom, 24 N.W. Greenwood Ave., Bend; 541-388-8331.
