Leo Beery, 94, of Bend, passed away of natural causes on Sept. 4, 2009. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, at Eastmont Church in Bend.
Mr. Beery was born Nov. 5, 1914, to Chester and Ola (Hendricks) in Cerro Gordo, IL. His family relocated to Hamlet, IN; Lancing, MI; Richmond, VI; and back to Indiana. He graduated from Grovertown High School in 1932.
Mr. Beery enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corp. in 1934. In 1938, he was transferred to Redmond, OR where he helped build Wickiup Dam and Reservoir and North Unit Irrigation Canal. While in Redmond, he met and married Maxine M. Kelly. They were married Sept. 21, 1941, on the Odem Farm north of Redmond.
Following his time in the CCCs, he worked for Brooks Scanlon mill, moved back to Indiana for short time and back to Bend. He went to work for Pacific Power and Light in Bend and Springfield. He retired in Bend after 35 yrs. with PPL.
He was active in church at First Baptist Church, Bend; Twin Rivers Baptist, Springfield; and Eastmont Church, Bend. He was commander of Sky Pilots and Kings Sons, both for boys. He and Maxine enjoyed taking young people on camp-outs.
After retirement, he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for 22 yrs. (where he earned several awards) and write-ups for his volunteerism. He also helped build horse shoe courts at Juniper Park in Bend and at Tadmor Church Camp out of Sweet Home, OR.
Mr. Beery was a fix-it man, and a helper of people wherever and whenever needed. He enjoyed camp-outs, hunting, horseshoe pitching, where he also won several awards, playing games, and working with wood.
Survivors include his sons and spouses, Joe and Diane of Bend, Michael and Joyce of Springfield, Larry and Janet of La Pine, and John of Bend; nine grandchildren; 12 great- grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine, of 67 yrs, who died June 13, 2009; son, Steven; daughter-in-law, Diana; and grandson, David Beery.
Leos warm, friendly, caring personality will be greatly missed.
