Now it’s time for a look at the local acts

Published: August 21. 2009 4:00AM PST

• You’ve heard the name Moon Mountain Ramblers , but maybe you’ve never made it to one of their gigs. Here’s an easy way to see what all the fuss is about: The band will play Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. for the Pickin’ & Paddlin’ Music Series. From 4 to 7 p.m., Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe will do boat and gear demos on the Deschutes River at the foot of the Colorado Avenue bridge, followed by the Ramblers’ performance. Kids are welcome, but dogs aren’t, and a donation to the Bend Paddle Trail Alliance is encouraged.

The JZ Band is already a rock ’n’ roll powerhouse, what with local long-timers Joe Leonardi and David Z at the helm. On Saturday night, they’ll add another piston to the lineup when they welcome Phillipe “Frenchy” Mallen to the mix. Check ’em out at 8 p.m. at Silver Moon Brewing & Taproom (24 N.W. Greenwood Ave., Bend). Cover is $5.

• Local singer-songwriter Shireen Amini has been out of town for a while, traveling the world and soaking up good stuff that will no doubt inform her performance tonight at Parrilla Grill (635 N.W. 14th St., Bend). Also sure to affect Amini’s show: Her new band, which features Lindsey Elias and Pat Pearsall of Empty Space Orchestra, plus Sisters scene vet Brent Alan and Bond Brothers keys guru Scott Hersh. Show up and you may very well get a Michael Jackson tribute. They’ll get started around 7 p.m., and cover is $5 if you drive, and $3 if you don’t.
