Bend golfer Jesse Heinly will be playing with and against some of the best junior golfers from the West later this month.
Heinly, a 17-year-old senior-to-be at Summit High School, has been selected by the Oregon Golf Association to play in the 41st Eddie Hogan Cup Team Matches, a 36-hole team competition that each year showcases the best junior golfers from the Western United States and Canada.
The tournament will be held Aug. 14-16 at Riverside Golf & Country Club in Portland.
Heinly will play for the Oregon II team, one of two Oregon squads in the tournament. He will join Portland’s Samuel Mendez and Will Guitteau, and West Linn’s Zachary Foushee. All four players were named to the team based on their play in OGA junior golf tournaments.
Teams representing Southern California have won four of the last five Hogan Cups, a tournament that began in 1969. The Oregon I team won in 2008.
Hogan Cup alumni include current PGA Tour players such as Fred Couples, Scott Simpson, Robert Gamez, Kirk Triplett, Peter Jacobsen and Tiger Woods. Woods was medalist of the 1990 Hogan Cup.
