May 20, 1919 - July 6, 2009

Harmon Hemsing, previously of Bend, died on July 6, 2009 in Hermitage, PA. He was 90 years old. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, July 25 at 1:30 pm at Whispering Winds in Bend.

Harmon was born May 20, 1919 in Havre, MT, on the family homestead The family moved to the small community of Enderlin, ND when he was an infant to be closer to family. Enderlin was a perfect fit for Harmon. He was very tall and athletic. He excelled in football, baseball and basketball in high school. He also built strong relationships with his school buddies that lasted throughout their lives.

In March of 1942, he was working in Salt Lake City and enrolled in the Marine Corp. He served as a Tech Sergeant in World War II in the Pacific Area traveling through the Marianas Islands with the destination of Okinawa. He returned home in March of 1946 and received an Honorable Discharge from the Marine Corp.

In 1945, while serving in the Marines, Harmon was temporarily stationed in Fort Worth, Texas. During this short stay, he met an attractive Texan that was working in Fort Worth as a beautician named Corene Proctor. After a short courting, they were married in Fort Worth on Friday, April 13, 1945. They remained married for 61 years until Corene passed away in 2006.

Before the war, Harmon had worked in large department stores in Minneapolis and Salt Lake City. He enjoyed this line of work and made it a career. Harmon joined WT Grants department stores after the war and quickly climbed the management ranks. This involved a number of moves every one to two years to move to new stores and new positions. Harmon retired in 1981 in San Antonio, Texas.

Harmon had a great sense of humor. He made friends quickly each time he and Corene moved and his employees thought very highly of him. He was a faithful Christian, father and friend and he will be missed by so many who loved him.
