Kid Culture features fun and educational books and toys for kids.

Graphic novels for young readers are an exciting and exploding niche in children’s literature. The quality of art and storytelling is wonderful and there truly is something for every child (and child at heart) to enjoy.

Each of the Deschutes Public Library branches has a graphic novel collection in the children’s department and all these gems may be found there.

‘Rapunzel’s Revenge’

By Shannon and Dean Hale

This is a witty, lively and empowering retelling of the classic fairy tale “Rapunzel” with a Western twist. After being imprisoned by the evil Mother Gothel, Rapunzel uses her wits and her incredibly versatile long hair to save herself and ultimately all those enslaved by the evil one. The illustrations are gorgeous and extend the humor of the story.

‘Babymouse’

By Jennifer and Matthew Holm

The delightful Babymouse series is a splendid addition to anyone’s reading list. Babymouse is an elementary school girl mouse with a big heart and even bigger dreams.

In her latest adventure “Babymouse: The Musical,” Babymouse dreams of being the star of the school’s latest musical but instead gets the role of understudy to her nemesis Felicia Furrypaws.

When called upon though, she comes out of the wings to save the show in her own unique style.

Babymouse rules!

‘Joey Fly, Private Eye

In

Creepy Crawly Crime’

By Aaron Reynolds

Call him Fly, Joey Fly, Private Eye, please! In this graphic novel, readers are invited into the sticky, muggy world of Bug City. Joey Fly is a private eye on a mission “to take the city back — one chump at a time — for a price.”

One day at the office, a young scorpion named Sammy Stingtail, who has a lot of chutzpah but no experience, shows up looking for work. Joey reluctantly takes him on as an apprentice as they accept the case of Delilah’s missing diamond pencil box.

Full of noir and humor, Joey Fly is a hoot and a buzz.

‘Toon Books’

By Art Spiegelman

This is a wonderful series of books developed by the famed Art Spiegelman.

These easy-to-read graphic novels are written and illustrated by many established authors who bring their own charm and humor to each book. The books feature such engaging characters as Luke, who while chasing down the pigeons in the park, creates mayhem of the whoosh kind, and Stinky Seymour, a monster who loves his smelly swamp.

Check out all of these graphic novels at your local Deschutes Public Library branch. Happy summer reading!
