Head of Jack Creek

Published: July 10. 2009 4:00AM PST

Jack Creek, west of Sisters, emerges from a hillside and within feet becomes a gurgling stream. The short hike to its headwaters offers shade, an easy stroll, picnic areas and flora not often seen in Central Oregon.

If you go

Getting there: From Sisters, take U.S. Highway 20 west for 12 miles. Turn right on Jack Lake Road and continue about 4 miles. Turn left at Road 1230. In less than a mile, you will cross Jack Creek, take an immediate left onto a cinder road. Campground is located here. Trail head is about a mile and a half down road; there are several forks, but the route to Head of Jack Creek is well-signed.

Difficulty: Easy

Cost: Northwest Pass or $5 fee to park at trailhead
