The June solstice is getting smaller in our rearview mirror, but only now is it truly beginning to feel like summer.
Warm temperatures seem to (finally) be here to stay. Sun-hungry drifters and their flotation devices crowd the Deschutes River. And next week, it’s time for Bend’s most visible public party, Munch & Music, to spring to life again.
It’s hard to believe, perhaps, but this summer marks 19 years of the Munch, which brings a free concert, food vendors and large crowds to Drake Park each Thursday from next week through Aug. 13.
This year, the six-show series kicks off with virtuoso guitarist Fareed Haque and his band the Flat Earth Ensemble. Haque specializes in jazz and classical music with a distinctly international flavor. Check him out at www.myspace.com/fareedhaquegroup.
The rest of the Munch & Music lineup includes African guitarist Vieux Farka Toure on July 16, reggae band Rhythm Culture on July 23, acoustic Americana quartet Misty River on July 30, nine-piece swing-and-more band High Street on Aug. 6 and the funky R&B of Soul Vaccination on Aug. 13.
Three more quick details about the event: There will be a play area for kids again this year. There will be a beer garden. But there shouldn’t be dogs. Leave Fido at home, because bringing him is a violation of city code.
Fareed Haque at Munch & Music; 5:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday; free; Drake Park, downtown Bend; 541-389-0995 or www.c3events.com.
