The Sheep Rock and Painted Hills units of the John Day Fossil Beds offer unique landscapes that are well worth the drive. Spring is an excellent time to visit the locations, northeast of Prineville, as the weather is still mild, snakes are still sleeping and the roads are clear of snow and ice.
