Glencoe got the best of Bend High football on Friday night — again.

In a rematch of last year’s Class 5A state semifinal, a game the Crimson Tide won 10-7, the Lava Bears fell 22-11.

Kyle Brown rushed for 130 yards and one touchdown and Richard Williams completed six of seven passes for 71 yards, but Bend could not stop Crimson Tide running back Kyle Hogan.

A backup for most of last season behind all-state tailback David Puckett, Hogan ran for 150 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries against the Lava Bears (0-1 overall).

Hogan sealed the game with one-yard score with 8 minutes, 36 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

“I don’t like losing, it bothers me, but I got a good feeling coming away from this game,” said Bend coach Craig Walker. “We played a really good football team. We had them on the ropes before we squandered it.”

Glencoe led 14-3 at halftime after its offense put together a nine-play scoring drive in both the first and second quarters. Starting at its own 20-yard line after Bend kicker Austin Crook opened the game with a kickoff that went out the back of the end zone, the Crimson Tide (1-0) marched 80 yards in just under four minutes, scoring on an eight-yard touchdown pass to receiver Kyle Kirwan from quarterback Conor Lien.

Glencoe scored again with 5:39 left in the first half to make it 14-0 when fullback Nolan Degner plowed past the goal line on a one-yard run for a touchdown and then caught a short pass for the two-point conversion.

Up to that point in the game, Bend had punted on its only three possessions and had run just 12 offensive plays.

“I think you can chalk up the first half to (kids thinking), ‘Wow, varsity is faster,’ ” said Walker, who has eight new starters on offense this season and four on defense. “But we made adjustments and you could see that.”

Trailing by two touchdowns with less than six minutes left in the half, Bend’s offense finally began to click. The Lava Bears, who did not record a first down until just 4:37 remained in the second quarter, got on the scoreboard for the first time in 2008 when Crook nailed a 24-yard field goal with 38 seconds left in the half.

Crook’s kick culminated a 12-play, 73-yard drive.

Bend carried its second-quarter momentum over to the second half when the Lava Bears went 75 yards in 12 plays to make the score 14-11 on their first possession. Brown carried the ball seven times for 19 yards on the drive, and fullback Gage Heinrich added two receptions for 25 yards, putting Bend within three points.

“Kyle Brown’s a good running back,” Walker said about his junior tailback, who carried the ball 33 times on Friday night. “He got 130 yards against a pretty good defense.”

After exchanging punts with the Lava Bears in the third quarter, the Crimson Tide responded with the game’s final touchdown on its first drive of the final period. Sparked by a 41-yard run by Hogan, Glencoe went 80 yards in 10 plays, scoring on a one-yard dive by the senior tailback. Hogan capped off the night with a two-point conversion run that made the score 22-11.

“We didn’t lay an egg, we competed,” said Walker, whose team compiled 225 yards of offense. “We had a lot of young guys grow up.”

Bend plays at Central Oregon rival Redmond next Friday night.
