Earnest Fred Graunitz of Salem died Tuesday, Oct. 28, of natural causes. He was 79.
A nicheside service will be held at 3 p.m. today at Deschutes Memorial Garden's Mausoleum Chapel.
Mr. Graunitz was born June 4, 1924, in Longview, Wash., to Paul and Alta (Lowman) Graunitz. He was raised in Castle Rock, Wash. He married Patricia Morton on July 6, 1946, in Longview, Wash.
Mr. Graunitz served in the Army during World War II.
He worked as a millwright for Weyerhaeuser in Longview for 35 years and retired in 1981 as a supervisor. He moved to La Pine in 1988 and then to Salem in 1998.
Mr. Graunitz enjoyed woodworking, traveling, the outdoors and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of Salem; three sons, Tim of Castle Rock, Wash., Patrick of Castle Rock and Michael of Bend; two daughters, Michele Kristensen of Salem and Kimberly of Salem; a brother, Robert of Longview; two sisters, Helene Kondro of Castle Rock, Wash., and Doris Carpenter of Newport, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister and his parents.

Eric R. Franz of Redmond died Oct. 22 in Portland of heart failure. He was 49.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at St. Thomas Catholic Church Parish Hall in Redmond. An internment service at Willamette National Cemetery will be held at a later date.
Mr. Franz was born March 12, 1954, in Los Angeles.
He served in the Navy for 11 years. He was a fire control technician on the USS Carl Vinson and also taught at Naval Station Mare Island. While in the Navy, he was twice awarded the Navy Achievement Medal.
Mr. Franz married Cynthia on June 16, 1981, in Eugene.
He worked for Lancair in the avionics department. He volunteered for the Opportunity Foundation and participated in the St. Thomas Catholic Church Choir.
Mr. Franz enjoyed music and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of Redmond; a son, Matthew of Redmond; a sister, Lisa McCoy of Bellville, Ill.; and a stepbrother, J. Canfield of Forest Grove.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
