SUNRIVER — Surf’s up in Central Oregon this weekend.

National qualifying competition for the professional 2009 Wave Loch Flow Tour takes place Saturday at Mavericks at Sunriver Resort. Mavericks, a fitness and aquatics facility located in the north part of Sunriver on Cottonwood Road, features an indoor FlowRider, which generates an artificial perpetual wave.

Competition on Saturday will include flowboarding and bodyboarding categories in the following divisions: Expert, age 12 and younger, 13 and older, 18 and older, and 30 and older (Masters), all of which are open to males and females. A separate division for females of any age also will be available.

Practice before the competition Saturday will be from 9 to 11 a.m.; the competition itself is scheduled to take place from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Cost to participate is $40 for each competitive category in the Expert division. In all other divisions, the entry fee is $35 for the first category and $5 for each additional category. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top four placers in the Expert division, including $600 for first place.

The Flow Tour is a multiple-city, national qualification tour for riders looking to compete in the tour’s national championships, held each year in San Diego.

According to Sunriver event organizers, participants in this weekend’s national qualifying competition are expected to include several locals, as well as a number of boarders from other Western states and from as far away as Texas.

But the wave-riding action is not limited to the pros. On Sunday, the flowboarding and bodyboarding competition will be open to Central Oregon residents and vacationing guests at Sunriver Resort. Cost to compete on Sunday is $15.

A practice session on Sunday is set for 8-9 a.m. Competition will be from 9 a.m. until noon. Prizes on Sunday will be awarded for best crash, best first-time rider and best trick.

Spectators are welcome at no charge.
